Here’s my Fitness Friday contribution for the week: Diet Journaling
For someone like me who has rushed through life without paying attention to what I’m actually putting into my body, things like portion control, nutrient information and such is a foreign world.
However, this is powerful information in one’s fight for fitness. Back in the fall of 2006, I trained with an amazing trainer at a gym near my home. At that time, he guided me to loose about 40 pounds. One of the things I learned working with him was the power of diet journaling. It is a real eye opener to see on paper what is going into your body.
For this particular leg of the journey, I’ll be using Fresh Apps, “Lose It!” on my iPhone as my diet and exercise journal. Right off the bat, I have found it easy to use and stacked with an immense library of name brand foods. When certain foods aren’t in the default library, I can add them and put in all the nutrient info.
Lose It! tracks my exercises and calories burned and gives me a budget of calories allowed throughout the day so I can make wise food selections.
To start off, I entered my current weight, birthday, height, goal weight, and how much weight I want to loose per week. Lose It! gave me July 16, 2010 as the day when I will achieve the goal weight at the loss ratio I entered.
I think it’s also importation to mention that tracking this info is great, but you have to know what to do with it. I have an annual physical scheduled soon and plan on showing this journal to my doctor. I’m hoping he will guide me on a proper nutrition regiment that will help me loose weight and fight for my fitness.
I’m looking forward to the convenience of having such a powerful tool right in my hands at all times. So far so good – I’ll keep you posted.

- What tools are you using to track your diet? Paper journal? Spreadsheet?
Maybe you have an idea that will help me or someone else in the fight for fitness! Join in the conversation.

Lose It! Is great for anyone who wants to be fit. I like how it allows you to track the total of nutritional components you ” turn on” and calculates a daily average. This is a huge help when trying to implement a realistic and healthful Diet strategy!
