Welcome to the Fitness Fridays Blog Carnival! I hope you will participate by sharing through your own blog or in the comments section below.

Please take a moment to read the full instructions and guidelines here before jumping in.

Here’s my Fitness Friday contribution for the week: Workplace Fitness

Raise your hand if . . . .

  • you can really afford a gym membership and personal trainer (about $1500+/year)
  • you have a massive amount of time to go to a gym during your work week

I am very fortunate that I have a job that gives me somewhat of a flexible schedule.  The nature of being a vocational minister is that there is an ebb and flow in the week to week work schedule. However, I have never really taken advantage of that to include a fitness plan. I’m trying to change that now.

Earlier this week, I dropped my daughter off at school, set my briefcase down, and went into our church’s gymnasium (we call it the Family Life Center as it also serves as our worship space or sanctuary). Anyway, one of my mentors has recently purchased and given me a set of 8lb dumb bells along with a hand full of quick-circuit calisthenics that incorporate multiple muscle groups for a quick, whole body workout. On Monday, I spent about 30 minutes doing this circuit as well as running up and down one of our stairwells about 5 times (that about killed me).

The work out felt great. Fortunately for me and my co-workers, we have plenty of shower facilities at the church so I did not offend the rest of the day.  As Monday’s go, I felt more productive and certainly had more energy.

Unfortunately, I did not make time for this the rest of the week.  It’s no one’s fault except mine because there were plenty of opportunities to get something in, I just didn’t make the time. Bad habits are hard to break.  There’s still the weekend and next week to come, which I plan on taking full advantage of those opportunities.

You can Google, “benefits of fitness in the work place,” for yourself that there are more reasons than not for employers to make fitness opportunities available.  I’m not talking gym memberships, rather than a dedicated room with some mats, mirrors, and a radio of sorts.  Maybe they can allow a “fitness break” 2 -3 times a week.  The I’m trying to make is that in the real world, we can not devote 6 hours a day to the gym to drop the weight and get fit.  Small steps are important steps.  Start by having a conversation with your boss to see what you can work out. I did, and it’s already paying off!

OK  – for those who need a little help with subjects for your contribution, here’s some help for this week:

  • How have you exercised during the work day and/or at your place of business?
  • Is your business getting an A+ in employee fitness? If so, how is that accomplished?

Maybe you have an idea that will help me or someone else in the fight for fitness! Join in the conversation.

OK, Bryan – I’m in … and I’m hurting this AM. My legs, ooohh.
Thanks for the transparency in your post for this week – I know how easy it is to skip. That’s why I paid the hard cash and if I’m not there at 6:00 AM, somebody is gonna be calling me and letting me have it.

I’ll tweet you 1-2x per week and see how you’re doing!

    • Bryan Patrick Says:

Thanks man – I’ll take all the accountability I can get. Thanks for joining Fitness Fridays – looking forward to the journey!

Hey Bryan- what a cool idea- a blog circus about fitness- sweet!

Just wanted to add alittle encouragement- I left some on Fred’s blog- I’m in college right now getting my degree as an “Exercise Science/Fitness Management” Major- take every opportunity you can to squeeze in a mini-workout- because it seriously adds up! I went from 245 to 175 in 6 months and am down to 165 for the past 3 years! :) So it can be done!

    • Bryan Patrick Says:

Justin, thanks for stopping by and for the encouragement. Good for you for dropping the weight in college while you’re young unlike me and Fred! (ha ha!)

Hope you can post some workouts or fitness tips on the carnival soon!

      -BP

  3. Judy Says:

Good for you, Bryan! I am really excited about your commitment. You can do it!!!
